Abstract Embroidery
Slow Stitching with Texture, Colour and Creativity
Emily Botelho creates highly textured, nature-inspired embroidery under the name Salt Stitches — and this book is an invitation into her process. Drawing on close observation of the natural world, Emily’s work is organic and intuitive, built from layers of stitching and embellishment over fabric printed with source photography she takes herself.
The book presents 12 projects across three distinct environments — coastal, mountain, and urban — each one demonstrating how to find inspiration, identify interesting textures and colour palettes, and select embellishments. Because the work is abstract by nature, there are no patterns to follow or step-by-step instructions. You decide when a piece is finished, which gives you complete creative freedom. Every piece will be unique.
Emily is a firm believer that inspiration is always close at hand, and encourages makers of all experience levels to engage with the textures on their doorstep. She now stitches full time in Canada, and teaches workshops around the world.
