A Journey From Sheep to Skein to Stitch

Slow Knitting by Hannah Thiessen applies the logic of the slow food movement to knitting practice — a case for sourcing carefully, making thoughtfully, thinking environmentally, experimenting fearlessly, and exploring openly. These five tenets structure the book, with each chapter built around one of them.

Each chapter combines fiber education (types, properties, sourcing), profiles of yarn makers and suppliers, and garment patterns inspired by the featured fibres. Contributors include Norah Gaughan, Bristol Ivy, and others working at the intersection of craft and material knowledge.

The book is less a pattern collection than a framework for thinking about knitting as a practice — what you make, what you make it from, and why. A companion volume, Seasonal Slow Knitting, applies the same tenets across a year of making.
